Treatments tried

What helped

Nothing yet — I am on a waiting list to discuss other options with a dermatologist.

What didn’t help

Six months of strict diet changes, vitamin D supplements I did not need, and steroid cream around the nail folds.

Side effects & warnings from my experience

None, other than a joyless six months of eating.

The full story

Most story sites are full of wins. This is not one, and that is exactly why I am writing it. My nail psoriasis showed up in my early forties: pitting first, like tiny pinpricks, then thickening and a couple of nails starting to lift. It is not agony, but it is constant — you see your own hands hundreds of times a day. The internet's answer was diet. So I did it properly: no alcohol for six months, no nightshades, less sugar, more oily fish, and vitamin D supplements on top (my blood level, when finally tested, had been fine all along). I tracked photos monthly. Result, for me: nothing. Six months, no visible change in a single nail. The steroid cream I dabbed around the nail folds did nothing either, which my GP said is common — creams have real trouble reaching the nail matrix where the damage happens. I do not regret the experiment and I am not saying diet does nothing for anyone — weight and alcohol have real evidence behind them for skin psoriasis, and other people here clearly noticed food triggers. But my nails did not care, and if you are six weeks into a joyless diet waiting for your nails to transform, you deserve to know that outcome exists. Next step for me is a proper dermatology appointment about treatments that actually reach nails. If something works, I will update this story. — This is an example story written by the Psoriasis People team to illustrate the case-story format while the community grows. It is a realistic composite, not one real person's account, and it will be replaced by real community stories.
