Treatments tried

What helped

Humid air, swimming in the ocean most mornings, short regular sun exposure, and honestly a much less stressful routine.

What didn’t help

Nothing failed as such — but the improvement partly faded after I came home to dry winter air.

Side effects & warnings from my experience

None, though I was strict about not burning — sunburn has triggered flares for me before.

The full story

Every Melbourne winter my elbows and shins flare: cold air outside, dry heating inside, less daylight. Last year work sent me to the Queensland coast for three months, and I accidentally ran a climate experiment on myself. The routine up there: a short ocean swim most mornings, ten or fifteen minutes of sun before it got harsh (never enough to burn — sunburn has set off flares for me before), humid air day and night, and a noticeably calmer workload. By week three my plaques were visibly flatter. By the end of the first month the redness had faded to pink and the scale had thinned right down. I still used my steroid cream on two stubborn spots, but far less often. I cannot tell you which ingredient mattered — the humidity, the salt water, the sun, the lower stress, or all four together. And I want to be honest about the ending: two months after coming home to winter, maybe half the improvement had faded. So no, I am not selling a beach as medicine. But for my skin, that environment made a real, visible difference, and it matches what I have heard from others. If a warm, humid stint is ever an option for you, it might be worth paying attention to what your skin does — and telling your dermatologist what you noticed. — This is an example story written by the Psoriasis People team to illustrate the case-story format while the community grows.
